Impossibility Results and Lower Bounds for Consensus under Link Failures

چکیده
We provide a suite of impossibility results and lower bounds for the required number of processes and rounds for synchronous consensus under transient link failures. Our results show that consensus can be solved even in presence of O(n) moving omission and/or arbitrary link failures per round, provided that both the number of affected outgoing and incoming links of every process is bounded. Providing a step further towards the weakest conditions under which consensus is solvable, our findings are applicable to a variety of dynamic phenomena such as transient communication failures and end-to-end delay variations. We also prove that our model surpasses alternative link failure modeling approaches in terms of assumption coverage.

Synchronous consensus under hybrid process and link failures☆
WE INTRODUCE A COMPREHENSIVE HYBRID FAILURE MODEL FOR SYNCHRONOUS DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS, WHICH EXTENDS A CONVENTIONAL HYBRID PROCESS FAILURE MODEL BY ADDING COMMUNICATION FAILURES: Every process in the system is allowed to commit up to fℓs send link failures and experience up to fℓr receive link failures per round here, without being considered faulty; up to some fℓsa≤fℓs and fℓra≤fℓr among those...
متن کاملA bivalency proof of the lower bound for uniform consensus
Bivalency argument is a widely-used technique that employs forward induction to show impossibility results and lower bounds related to consensus. However, for a synchronous distributed system of n processes with up to t potential and f actual crash failures, applying bivalency argument to prove the lower bound for reaching uniform consensus is still an open problem. In this paper, we address th...
متن کاملCoordination Problems in Distributed Systems (extended Abstract)
In this paper we provide a framework for understanding and comparing various lower bounds and impossibility results concerning the solution to coordination problems like atomic commit for distributed transactions and other consensus problems . The key to our treatment is the distinction between information that is transferred by (datagram) messages and information that can be deduced from the e...
متن کاملUsing Failure Detectors to Solve Consensus in Asynchronous Shared-memory Systems 1 Background and Overview of Results
Chandra and Toueg proposed a new approach to overcome the impossibility of reaching consensus in asynchronous message-passing systems subject to crash failures 6]. They augment the asynchronous message-passing system with a (possibly unreliable) failure detector. Informally , a failure detector provides some information about the processes that have crashed during an execution of the system. In...
متن کاملAgreement in Directed Dynamic Networks
We study distributed computation in synchronous dynamic networks where an omniscient adversary controls the unidirectional communication links. Its behavior is modeled as a sequence of directed graphs representing the active (i.e. timely) communication links per round. We prove that consensus is impossible under some natural weak connectivity assumptions, and introduce vertex-stable root compon...
